The evidence is promising but still limited. Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is among the more credible herbal options for testosterone, with several small studies suggesting it can raise levels and improve symptoms — especially in men who are stressed or already low.
Tongkat ali appears to work partly by lowering SHBG (which frees up more usable testosterone) and by reducing cortisol. Trials in stressed adults found improved testosterone-to-cortisol ratios and better mood; studies in older or low-testosterone men reported modest rises in testosterone, libido, and well-being. The catch is that many studies are small, short, and sometimes industry-funded, and product quality varies enormously — a lot of cheap supplements contain little active extract.
So it's cautiously interesting rather than proven. The men most likely to notice something are those under chronic stress or with genuinely low testosterone; men with already-healthy levels usually see little.
What to do: if you try it, choose a reputable, standardised extract (often standardised for eurycomanone), typically dosed around 200–400 mg a day, and give it 8–12 weeks. It's generally well tolerated short term. As always, treat it as a potential add-on — sleep, body fat, and training do the heavy lifting, and no herb replaces a proper diagnosis if you suspect low testosterone.
