Does Testosterone Make Men Take Risks? What 52 Studies Found

The idea is everywhere. High testosterone makes men bold, decisive and willing to gamble. Low testosterone makes them cautious, hesitant, risk-averse. It explains why men crash cars and start businesses, why trading floors are full of young men, why your mate who started TRT suddenly quit his job.

It is one of the most repeated claims in men's health, and an entire online industry rests on it. In 2026 somebody finally pooled the evidence properly.

Fifty-two studies. Seventeen thousand three hundred and forty participants. And no consistent relationship.

What the analysis did

The problem researchers set out to solve was that the literature contradicted itself. Some studies linked higher testosterone to greater risk-taking. Others found nothing. A few found the opposite.

When a field looks like that, individual studies stop being informative and the only way forward is to pool them.

The 2026 meta-analysis, published in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews, gathered 52 studies covering 17,340 participants that measured both testosterone and risk-taking. It included the full range of methods: blood samples, saliva samples, and studies that administered testosterone directly and observed what changed.

Risk-taking was assessed through gambling tasks, lottery games and validated personality questionnaires. Results were pooled using multilevel random-effects modelling, which accounts for studies varying in size and quality rather than treating them as equal.

The conclusion was that testosterone does not reliably predict risk-taking behaviour. The apparent relationship in the literature reflects inconsistency between studies rather than a real effect.

Why the belief survived so long

Three reasons, and understanding them is more useful than the finding itself, because the same mechanisms produce most of the confident claims in men's health.

The animal evidence is real, and it does not transfer

Testosterone drives aggression and dominance behaviour in many species, and that research is solid. Seasonal breeders show dramatic behavioural changes tracking hormone cycles.

Humans are not seasonal breeders, our behaviour is shaped by culture and context to a degree no other species approaches, and our testosterone range is narrower than the experimental manipulations used in animal work. Small studies with striking results get published

A study of forty men finding that testosterone predicts gambling behaviour is publishable and quotable. A study of forty men finding no relationship often is not. Over two decades this produces a literature that looks convincing and is not, which is exactly why pooling 52 studies gives a different answer from reading any three of them.

It confirms something people already believe

The idea that hormones explain male behaviour is culturally comfortable. It flatters risk-takers, excuses recklessness, and gives the cautious something to buy. A claim that useful survives on very little evidence.

What testosterone does affect

Dismissing the risk-taking claim is not the same as saying testosterone has no effect on how you feel. It has several, and they are better documented.

Mood, modestly. Correcting a genuine deficiency produces a small but real improvement in mood and energy. The largest trial found exactly that, and also found no effect on cognition or sleep. Small and specific. Low testosterone and depression covers where that line falls.

Libido, clearly. The most consistent behavioural effect in the entire literature.

Confidence in a narrow sense. Some evidence suggests testosterone influences status-seeking in competitive situations. That is a much narrower claim than "makes you a risk-taker", and even it is contested.

Body composition and physical capacity. Not behaviour, but it changes how a man feels about himself, and that plausibly changes what he attempts.

Notice what is missing: decisiveness, boldness, entrepreneurial drive, willingness to gamble. Those are personality and circumstance, and men reach for a hormonal explanation because it is easier to buy than to change.

What this means if you are on TRT

Two practical points.

If you feel bolder after starting, that is worth examining rather than trusting. Feeling better generally makes people more willing to act, and that is a good thing. But the evidence does not support the idea that your risk assessment has improved. If anything, the honest reading is that your judgement is the same and your enthusiasm is higher.

This matters at the point where men make decisions they would not have made a year earlier. Quitting a job, moving money, buying something large. The correct question is whether the decision holds up on paper, not whether it feels right.

If you are considering TRT hoping to become more decisive, the evidence does not support it. Sexual function, energy and body composition are what it delivers in men with genuine deficiency. Personality change is not. TRT before and after covers what actually changes and on what timeline.

The wider pattern

This finding belongs to a category worth recognising, because once you see it you spot it everywhere in this field.

A biologically plausible mechanism gets established in animals. A handful of small human studies find something. The claim escapes into popular culture. Twenty years later, a proper synthesis finds the effect was never reliably there.

The same shape appears in several claims men take as settled. That masturbation lowers testosterone, which the evidence does not support. That specific foods meaningfully raise it. That most testosterone-boosting supplements do anything at all, which they largely do not.

The useful habit is not scepticism about everything. It is asking one question: has anyone pooled the studies, and what happened when they did?

For risk-taking, someone has, and the answer is that the effect was never there.

What actually predicts risk-taking

If not testosterone, then what? The research points to unglamorous things.

  • Age. The strongest single predictor. Risk tolerance falls steadily from the early twenties onwards, in both sexes
  • Personality, particularly sensation-seeking, which is relatively stable across a lifetime
  • Financial position. People with more to lose take fewer chances, and this is often mistaken for temperament
  • Context and framing. The same person makes different choices depending on how an option is presented, which is one of the best-replicated findings in behavioural science
  • Social environment. Who is watching, and what they expect

These are less satisfying than a hormone, because you cannot buy any of them.

The honest summary

Testosterone does not make men take risks. The largest synthesis available, covering 52 studies and 17,340 people, found no reliable relationship.

What it does affect is libido clearly, mood and energy modestly in men who are genuinely deficient, and body composition substantially. Those are real and worth having.

What it does not do is change who you are. If you are cautious at 14 nmol/L, you will be cautious at 22. The belief otherwise has sold a great deal of product, and it turns out to have been resting on studies that never agreed with each other in the first place.

Common questions

Does high testosterone make men take more risks?

Why do so many people believe it then?

Because the animal evidence is genuinely strong and does not transfer to humans, because small striking studies get published while null results often do not, and because it confirms a widely held cultural belief.

Yes, but narrowly. Libido is the clearest effect. Mood and energy improve modestly when a genuine deficiency is corrected. There is contested evidence around status-seeking in competitive situations.

Will TRT make me more decisive?

The evidence does not support it. Men often feel more willing to act, but that reflects feeling better generally rather than improved risk assessment. Judge decisions on their merits, not on how they feel.

Does low testosterone make men timid?

No. The same meta-analysis that found no link at the high end found none at the low end either. Low testosterone causes fatigue, low libido and low mood, which can look like withdrawal but is not the same as risk aversion.

What about the finger-length ratio studies?

The 2D:4D ratio is a widely used proxy for prenatal testosterone exposure, but its validity is heavily contested and results across studies are inconsistent. It is not strong ground for any behavioural claim.
