Everyday products, from shampoo to food packaging, can carry endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Walk through your home, tick what you use, and get your personal exposure score, plus the swaps that matter most.
Some everyday products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), substances that scientific and regulatory bodies including the Endocrine Society, the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the European Chemicals Agency have flagged as potentially interfering with hormones. The best-known examples are phthalates in fragrance and soft plastics, bisphenols such as BPA in food-can linings and till receipts, PFAS in non-stick cookware and stain-resistant fabrics, parabens in some cosmetics, and triclosan in some antibacterial products.
This audit does not measure anything in your body. It counts how many recognised sources sit in your daily routine, weights them by how much each one typically contributes, and shows you which few changes remove the most exposure for the least effort and money.
The bathroom is usually the largest single contributor, because leave-on products are applied to skin every day and stay there. Scented deodorant, moisturiser, shampoo and body spray are the repeat offenders, and fragrance is the common thread: on most labels the word "parfum" stands for a mixture the manufacturer does not have to itemise.
The kitchen matters because of heat. Warmth is what moves compounds out of packaging and into food, which is why reheating in plastic, scratched non-stick pans and old storage tubs carry more weight here than the same materials used cold. Tinned food and till receipts add smaller amounts of bisphenols.
The bedroom and laundry contribute through the things you spend eight hours next to and the residues left on fabric. Air fresheners, plug-ins, scented candles, heavily fragranced detergents and fabric conditioners all add fragrance chemicals to indoor air. Household dust is a genuine route too, since flame retardants and other semi-volatile compounds settle into it.
Food and habits cover the routes that are easy to overlook: drinking from bottles left in a hot car, takeaway containers, and how often you ventilate the rooms you live in.
Honesty matters more than alarm here. The laboratory evidence that these compounds can interfere with hormone signalling is solid. What is far less settled is how much difference typical, low-level, everyday exposure makes to an individual person's health, because that question is extremely hard to study well and the research is still developing.
So the reasonable position sits between two unhelpful extremes. It is not true that this is proven to be harming you. It is also not true that it is nothing. What is true is that most of the largest sources are cheap and simple to reduce, and that reducing them costs you very little even if the eventual answer turns out to be modest.

If you do nothing else, do these three. Stop reheating food in plastic and use glass or ceramic instead, because heat plus plastic is the single most consistent route in a normal kitchen. Switch your daily leave-on products to fragrance-free versions, since these are the ones that stay on your skin all day rather than being rinsed off. Ventilate more and use fewer air fresheners, because indoor air and settled dust carry more than most people expect.
Occasional exposure is not the problem worth solving. Daily habits are. A perfume worn to a wedding is not the same as a scented moisturiser applied every morning for a decade, and the audit weights them accordingly.
